LAWYERS WANTED TO JOIN THE
International Commission for Labour Rights

Critical assistance for working people and trade unions worldwide

In February 2001 at a meeting in Geneva between representatives of the International Centre for Trade Union Rights (ICTUR) and the International Association of Democratic Lawyers (IADL) the International Commission for Labour Rights was established.

Both organizations are utilizing their networks of lawyers to provide assistance to those seeking to enforce internationally and locally established labour laws.

The Commission will recruit and organize lawyers into panels of Commissioners - teams headed by labour law experts who to be called upon to engage in a variety of actions aimed at enforcing international and local labour standards. The Commission was formally announced and launched in Geneva, June 2001 and has embarked on a series of high-profile actions to investigate labour rights abuses worldwide.

The Commissioners are drawn from the ranks of the world's labour law experts and will take appropriate actions including the production of independent reports on their findings. The Commissioners will also respond to calls from workers and worker organizations, as well as develop proposals for commissions based on its observations that labour rights are in a particular area are in jeopardy.

The immediate tasks of the Commission are:

  • Training - high level training for the lawyers to be confirmed as Commissioners
  • Primary assistance - responding to major violations of trade union and workers freedoms.

The Commission which began work in 2001, became fully active in 2002. The Commission has secured the support of several international and regional lawyers' organisations. The Commission is independent of the trade union movement but has attracted the interest and support of many of the International Trade Secretariats.

ICTUR and IADL are seeking more lawyers, trade unionists, NGO professionals and academics to join the Commission and to participate in its work.

The Commission has attracted strong support around the world: in Australia, France, Indonesia, Italy, Germany, Greece, Bulgaria, Spain, Namibia, the USA, New Zealand, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Ghana, Norway, Sweden, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Mexico, Kenya, Colombia and South Africa, the Baltic region and tri-national American networks.

Please contact ICTUR (www.labourcommission.org) or IADL if you would like to join the project or receive more information.

ICTUR and IADL would like to hear from junior and senior lawyers, as well as trade unionists and academic commentators. Lawyers with language skills, experience of international surveying and labour rights are particularly encouraged to apply.
